Port Orange Councilman Chase Tramont has been prepping for Hurricane Irma with the city council as well as with his family.

Tramont wrote in an email that he visited the Emergency Operating Center on Saturday, Sept. 9, where the department heads were working with staff to ensure the city is prepared for what the storm brings. According to Tramont, call center employees were busy answering phones, logging concerns and addressing issues brought to them.

The councilman noted he has been staying connected with city management and took several trips around town to make house calls to residents with flooded roads. He wrote that the council has mostly been focusing on disseminating information to the public regarding safety concerns and pertinent information.

"Sometimes the scariest thing during these types of events is not being in-the-know," Tramont wrote. "It is important that the public sees their officials and staff at work. It not only keeps them informed but also provides peace of mind knowing that the people relaying the information are taking action and doing their jobs."

At home, Tramont said he and his wife have been preparing for the hurricane by first making sure that their house and family were protected by boarding up windows and placing sand bags around the residence while also stocking up with supplies.

Tramont has also been assisting other residents in boarding up their homes the past few days and clearing out the drainage systems in some neighborhoods.

Tramont wrote that his message to residents is to be prudent, noting citizens have had ample notice for this storm and that his hope is that everyone heeded the warnings put out and did what was needed to prepare. He also advised residents should stay dialed into the city's website as well as social media and other outlets for alerts and updates.

"You've prepared as best as you can so sit back, stay calm, and enjoy the snacks, drinks and fellowship for the rest of the evening," Tramont wrote. "May God be with those already impacted by this storm and may He protect the City of Port Orange."
