One Port Orange family who left Florida when Hurricane Matthew hit last year decided to brave Hurricane Irma this year.

Marilyn Amato, her son, Sean Boyer, his girlfriend and the family pets spent Sunday night hunkered down at home watching movies and eating snacks. Amato added that it was hard for anyone to sleep.

Amato said when Matthew hit is was difficult finding a hotel, finding gas and stressful dealing with the traffic. It was decided this year they would stay.

“We thought the stress of leaving was worse than the stress of staying put,” Amato said.

The family never lost power through the storm and they did not even board up their windows.

Amato, a realtor, said she is now going to try to check on the homes of her clients as some of them aren’t in town and have been nervous about what the storm would do to the area. She noted in addition to catching up with her work she may also try to pick up a few more supplies for the next few days.

“We were very blessed actually, compared to a lot of people,” Amato said.
