Port Orange neighbors have been working alongside each other to help clean up debris and cut down parts of a large oak tree that fell on a family’s home when Irma hit.
The storm knocked an oak tree onto the house of a family of three on Sunday, Sept. 10.
The tree crashed into the front quadrant of the house, located in Deep Forest, where a mother and her two children live. The tree landed on the area of one of the daughters’ rooms. According to Janice Ramos, who rents the house to the family, no one was home at the time the tree fell.
Ramos said the mother and her children are staying with friends and family.
The house has electrical and water damage, mainly in the hallways and guest bathroom.
Ramos said they have been trying to remove some of the limbs to cover the open areas with a tarp and prevent further damage, adding that “anything is better than nothing.”
Ramos said this is the second time in two years that they have had tree damage to the house, the first being when Hurricane Matthew hit.
Ramos said Deep Forest has many old oaks that are dangerous to homes when storms hit. She has filed an insurance claim but is now waiting for someone to assess the damage.
As for the rest of the neighborhood, Ramos said it is full of debris and that residents have been working to remove smaller branches from houses and lawns.
