Body found in Halifax River ID'd

Port Orange Police have identified the body that was found floating in the Halifax River as 84-year-old Richard Dorfner. 

According to authorities, around 7 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10, Port Orange Police responded to a report of a body floating in the Halifax River. The body was identified as Dorfner and authorities reported that there were "no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death."

Just after 12 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10, Port Orange police located an unattended vehicle at the boat ramp on the 90 block of Dunlawton Ave. Inside the vehicle, there was a wallet and set of keys that belonged to the registered owner, Dorfner.

Dorfner was entered by police as a missing person after contacting his family and notifying them about the circumstances. 

According to the report, "Dorfner was an avid fisherman and it is believed at this time that he went to see what the river conditions were and accidentally fell into the water where he ultimately succumbed to the inclement conditions." 

The case is currently an open investigation and no further information has been released.
