A bicyclist was taken to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach with non-life threatening injuries after being hit by a car, police reported.
According to the Port Orange Police Department, on Tuesday, Sept. 19 just before 8 a.m., a car that was traveling east on Herbert Street had stopped at a red traffic signal at the intersection of Nova Road.
The person on the bike had stopped on the sidewalk on the east side of Nova and, when the pedestrian signal turned to 'walk,' they entered into the intersection, according to the incident report. The individual used the marked crosswalk as they headed west.
The driver of the car did not see the person on the bike due to the sun's glare and made a right-hand turn onto Nova crashing into the bicyclist, police reported. The bicyclist fell to the ground and was dragged by the vehicle for a short distance, according to authorities.
The driver and the passenger in the car were not injured, according to authorities.
According to the report, the bicycle, a blue Mongoose, had heavy damage from the crash.
The person on the bike had not been wearing a helmet, according to police.
The driver was found at fault and was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk, according to the report.
