It's been an up-and-down season for Mainland, as the Buccaneers (2-2) were bulldozed by Dr. Phillips 20-0 on Friday, Sept. 22.
The Panthers' Devodney Alford, who took a direct snap into the end zone from four yards out, struck first. The Buccaneers gave up another rushing touchdown in the second quarter to go into the half down 14-0.
Mainland had an opportunity to score halfway through the third quarter when its offense made it inside of Dr. Phillips' 10-yard line, but a failed jet sweep on 4th-and-goal from the 7-yard line ended that chance.
It was the first time Mainland was shut out since Sept. 27, 2013 — a 6-0 loss to American Heritage.
The Buccaneers return to action in a neutral conference game against Deltona on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m.
Halfway through the first quarter against Astronaut, Seabreeze kicker Zach McNeely ripped a kick through the uprights from 45 yards. It was the Sandcrabs’ first points of the game and their first points of the season.
Seabreeze (1-2) defeated Astronaut 3-0 at Seabreeze High School on Friday, Sept. 22.
After the field goal, the game was largely a defensive battle.
“We didn’t threaten on offense really much more,” Sandcrabs coach Troy Coke said. “The defense was lights out all night. … It really became just kind of a field position game at that point.”
With Astronaut marching down the field in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Seabreeze defensive back Jalen Miranda picked off a pass to end the game, ensuring the first win of the season for the Sandcrabs.
“All you had to do after the game was just look at our kids,” Coke said. “Doing backflips and jumping in the air and running over to the fans. … You could tell that they really enjoyed it.”
Seabreeze returns home to face Pine Ridge on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m.
