Facing a fourth down in the first quarter between Matanzas and Treasure Coast, the Titans’ punter fumbled the snap. The punter scooped up the loose ball, broke a tackle and flicked the ball to an open teammate, who went 77 yards to the end zone for the first score of the game.
However, the Pirates (2-1) stormed back to defeat Treasure Coast 20-13 on Friday, Sept. 22. Senior receiver Devin Mathews scored the first touchdown of the game for Matanzas on a 31-yard pass.
Titans were five yards away from scoring until Pirates defensive back Branden Gilyard took a fumble 97 yards the opposite direction to tie the game at 13 in the second half.
With 2:47 to play in the final quarter, Matanzas drove 62 yards down the field to take the lead, scoring on a 2-yard run by quarterback Ryan Thomas.
“It was a pretty good high school football game,” Pirates coach Robert Ripley said.
The Crusaders defeated 2016 state champions Donahue Catholic 24-12 on Friday, Sept. 22, according to a release.
FBCA began the game on defense and forced a quick three-and-out that was followed by a 60-yard punt return touchdown by the Crusaders' Zayne Smith. First Baptist quarterback Cole Nailor threw for two passing touchdowns. In addition, the Crusaders' defense forced two safeties.
Smith was named the game's MVP.
Next up, FBCA travels to Jacksonville to face Seacoast Christian Academy at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29.
