Matanzas

Facing a fourth down in the first quarter between Matanzas and Treasure Coast, the Titans’ punter fumbled the snap. The punter scooped up the loose ball, broke a tackle and flicked the ball to an open teammate, who went 77 yards to the end zone for the first score of the game.

However, the Pirates (2-1) stormed back to defeat Treasure Coast 20-13 on Friday, Sept. 22. Senior receiver Devin Mathews scored the first touchdown of the game for Matanzas on a 31-yard pass.

Titans were five yards away from scoring until Pirates defensive back Branden Gilyard took a fumble 97 yards the opposite direction to tie the game at 13 in the second half.

With 2:47 to play in the final quarter, Matanzas drove 62 yards down the field to take the lead, scoring on a 2-yard run by quarterback Ryan Thomas.

“It was a pretty good high school football game,” Pirates coach Robert Ripley said.
