April has been proclaimed as Water Conservation Month to help bring awareness to residents and businesses about the importance of water conservation and the actions that Floridians can take to protect the state’s water resources.
The proclamation was made by Mayor Don Burnette at the Tuesday, April 3 city council meeting.
This year marks the 20th anniversary proclaiming April as Water Conservation Month.
“By adding our proclamation to the statewide list, we are showing Florida’s elected officials the importance of water efficiency and water conservation programs,” Port Orange Public Utilities Director Lynn Stevens said. “In addition, it provides an opportunity to further educate our Port Orange citizens on the importance of conserving potable drinking water and reclaimed water by taking simple steps to conserve water.”
Port Orange distributed a daily average of 5.8 million gallons of drinking water in 2017 to its residents, equalling approximately 86 gallons per person per day. In addition to drinking water, residents in Port Orange used an average of 5.9 million gallons per day of reclaimed water for irrigation.
The city reuses 100% of wastewater collected as reclaimed water.
