D’marcus Adams wasn’t feeling well when he showed up a Spruce Creek High School on Wednesday, April 4, to compete in the Five Star Conference Championship. The Buccaneers’ premier speedster was under-the-weather, sore from the non-stop action of Mainland’s track season.
However, Adams dominated in the 400-meter dash, the 110-meter hurdles and long jump, sweeping gold in all three events. In addition, Adams was part of a relay team that set a new school record of 3:16.44 in the 4x400-meter relay, which burned second-place Flagler Palm Coast by almost 12 seconds.
“I was kind of shaky today,” said Adams, who will play football for Florida State in the fall. “I wasn’t really felling it, but I sucked it up.”
“It’s been a blessing to have him for four years. He’s worked his butt off. The sky's the limit for him.”

The Buccaneers’ boys team came up short to FPC and Spruce Creek, placing third in the conference tournament, but their speed will be a force to reckon come the state meet.
“We’ve been putting in the work to get closer to Miami Northwester,” said Latavies Sylvester, who took part in the Buccaneers’ record-smashing 4x400. “We’ve just been trying to get our time down these past couple of meets.”
Sylvester also took first in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash with times of 11.00 seconds and 22.13 seconds, respectively.
“What’s going on is that they’re finally putting it together,” Mainland coach Terry Anthony said. “We’ve been running well all year. We wanted to hit our stride around the Five Star or districts. Tonight was just an example of running out in front.”
This is Anthony’s last chance to take gold at the state meet in the 4x400 with his current team. Adams, Sylvester, Steffan Mallory and Elijah White are all seniors.
“It’s really a blessing to have that many guys who can go out there and work that hard,” he said. “And I’ve got to replace every last one of them for next year, but it’s a good problem to have.”
