Sugar Mill Elementary students took some time out of their evening on Friday, April 6, to shop at the Port Orange Dollar Tree for a good cause.
Sugar Mill students donated three large baskets stuffed with items such as baby teethers, stuffed animals, activity books, art supplies, and small toys to the Live Like Cameron Foundation on Saturday.
On Wednesday, the group plans to donate three more baskets to Halifax Hospital Speediatrics Unit.
The fourth and fifth graders, as part of the Florida Future Educators of America, had collected $100 from teachers and staff at the school to purchase care and activity bags for Halifax Hospital and Arnold Palmer pediatric units. However, by the time students were finished shopping, they had bought $165 worth of times to donate.
The collection was made on behalf of the Live Like Cameron Foundation, which was created in 2017 in memory of Cameron Fulling who died of cancer 12 days before his twelfth birthday. The foundation's goal is to assist families financially and emotionally as they battle cancer.
The foundation was collecting items on behalf of Cameron.
The donations will be dropped off at Halifax on Wednesday, March 11.
