Sidelines: Sharks snap 18-year drought in district meet

The Atlantic Sharks' boys and girls track teams competed in the 2A District 6 championship meet on April 12 at The Villages. While the Sharks' girls team qualified for regionals in three events, the Sharks' boys team captured the district title. The win broke an 18-year drought for the boys. In addition, senior Jason Axon set a school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.61 seconds, freshman Darnell Rooplal broke the district record in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:11.49 and the boys 4x400-meter relay team set a school record with a time of 3:31.25. Here are the results:

Girls:

  • 100-meter dash: Tyjai Mack 13.09 (2nd)
  • 4x100-meter relay: Relay Team 51.93 (1st)
  • Long jump: Shakawanza Brown 5.34 meters (1st)

Boys:

  • 100-meter dash: Jason Axon 11.06 (1st), Maximus Campbell 11.50 (4th)
  • 200-meter dash: Campbell 22.70 (1st)
  • 400-meter dash: Axon 49.61 (2nd), Campbell 52.19 (4th)
  • 800-meter run: Axon 2:03.22 (2nd), Jaylon Pressley 2:06.86 (4th)
  • 1,600-meter run: Darnell Rooplal 4:43.66 (2nd)
  • 3,200-meter run: Rooplal 10:11.49 (2nd)
  • 4x400-meter relay: Relay Team 3:31.25 (2nd)
  • 4x800-meter relay: Relay Team 8:40.00 (2nd)
  • High jump: David Long 1.9 meters (3rd)
  • Long jump: Long 6.36 meters (1st)
  • Triple jump: Long 12.95 meters (1st)

Hawks girls take second at districts, boys third

The Spruce Creek Hawks’ boys and girls track teams competed in the 4A District 2 championship meet on April 11 in Clermont. The girls took second place, and the boys finished in third. Here are the results:

  • 400-meter dash: Kaylee Van Rij 1:01.22 (3rd)
  • 1,600-meter run: Camryn Cooney 5:15.27 (3rd)
  • 3,200-meter run: Cooney 11:10.88 (2nd)
  • 100-meter hurdles: Dasia  Stevens (3rd)
  • 300-meter hurdles: Jordan Di Verniero 46.85 (4th)

Port Orange gymnast commits to Auburn

Spruce Creek senior Sabrina Cheney, a three-time Junior Olympic national qualifier for USA gymnastics, committed to Auburn University to compete in gymnastics. She will arrive on their campus in June for the summer semester.
Sabrina has been traveling to Orlando five-to-six days per week for practice for the past 10 years. Starting the sport as a 4-year-old, she is now in her sixth year as a Level 10 gymnast.
Cheney also maintained a 4.0 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society and is a recipient of the Gene Stowe Scholarship. She is also active with community service events such as Autism Speaks and is an advocate for several children's facilities.
