Late in the third quarter in the final game of the regular season, the Pirates were ready to score. After a 25-yard catch and run, Matanzas had just five yards left to take its first lead of the game over crosstown rival Flagler Palm Coast.
Enter Breaza Robinson.
The Bulldogs’ star two-way player intercepted a pass at the goal line and returned the pick 79 yards for a touchdown.
“I couldn’t let them score,” Robinson said. “All I saw was the end zone.”
Robinson scored all three touchdowns and added another interception for the Bulldogs as FPC defeated Matanzas 20-7 on the afternoon of Thursday, April 19, at FPC High School. The win broke Matanzas’ three-year win streak against the Bulldogs.
The two teams were tied 7-7 throughout the third quarter when a Pirates receiver broke free down the sideline. She was about to score — before FPC’s Malia Dalzell tracked her down from across the field to pull her flag before she crossed the goal line. The play set up Robinson’s interception.
Gambone said having a player like Robinson on the team is an asset with the postseason on the horizon.
“When you play in big games, you need your best players to be play-makers,” he said. “When we need a big play, we go to Breaza. That’s pretty much the way it is.”
