Old Kings Elementary Chorus students performed at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park on Saturday, April 21, to celebrate Earth Day. OKES students in the Marine Ecology Microplastic Awareness Initiative also presented their plans to get local merchants to switch from polystyrene to paper alternatives.
OKES teacher Ellen Asher said Smoothie King has made the switch and that McDonald’s is serving drinks in paper cups. The Bio-d-GREAT-able lunch tray switch that took place earlier in the year countywide stemmed from OKES' green efforts.
Leah Ruddell, an OKES fourth-grader, wrote her Tropicana Speech about microplastics and placed second in the competition. She shared her speech on Saturday.
Buddy Taylor Middle School student Nicholas Blumengarten created a website embedded into the Flagler County School District Website for incoming freshman to use as a resource for choosing paths toward graduation through his Future Problem Solver project called “Project INFO.”
Blumengarten will be attending the Future Problem Solvers/Community Problem Solvers International Competition in Wisconsin. He shared Project INFO’s mission at the Curriculum Carnival at BTMS on April 19.
“My goal is to better inform incoming freshman about opportunities available,” Blumengarten said in an email. “My district provides school choice, allowing students to choose which high school suits them. One way that I am solving my goal is through the district website by providing one page connecting to both high schools' correct information to decide their high school path.”
The site is: flaglerschools.com/district/high-school-planning.
Students from First Baptist Christian Academy in Bunnell participated in the 4H/Tropicana Public Speaking Contest, which was designed to “teach young people the techniques of effective public speaking.” Each student was to prepare a two- to three-minute speech on an approved topic of their choice.
In the contest finals, each student gave their speeches in front of a panel of judges, the fourth- through sixth-grade classes and several parents. FBCA top class winners were: fourth-grader London Streeter, fifth-grader Ashtyn Alonzo and sixth-grader Anjeli Izquierdo. They will now go on to compete in the county finals on May 3.
A Flagler Palm High School i3 Academy freshmen biology class participated in Relay for Life, raising over $2,000 to help fight cancer.
Bunnell Elementary School sixth-graders Chris Boykin, Kameran Gordon, Kaleb Perdue and Carlos Almeida will be making caprese hasselback chicken with parmesan and spinach orzo with mini cannoli as they compete in the 2018 Gridiron Cooking Challenge, which will take place Saturday, May 5, at EverBank Field in Jacksonville.
Flagler Palm Coast High School instructor Chelsea Schlaffer named senior Abigail Register as the Student Artist of the Month for April.
Q+A with Register, from Schlaffer:
Inspiration for artwork:
“My inspiration comes from the world and the variety of colors and shapes in nature. The human figure is art within itself and it is something that is so fascinating to me. So, combining the two inspirations get me the final pieces that I hope would inspire others.”
What do these pieces mean to you?
“They represent what the world has to offer and how you can use it to your advantage. I want to show what the world has offered to me.”
Schlaffer said she’s excited to see where art takes Register.
“I am impressed by her drive to succeed and her compassion for others,” Schlaffer said. “She understands colors and proportions, and I think that really shows in her work. She is inspired by her surroundings, other artists and nature.”
