Dogs and dog lovers alike hopped on paddle boards and kayaks for fun in the sun on the Halifax River during the Paddles and Pups event on Sunday, April 29.
The festivities at Fortunato Park benefited the Seabreeze Marching 100 and Symphony Orchestra, who have been invited by the lord mayor of Westminster to play in the London’s New Year’s Day Parade in January 2019.
The average cost per student to make this trip is $3,175, and there are over 100 students in the program, Band Director Jarrod Koskoski said.
"People bring their dogs and they go paddle boarding; apparently it's a thing we were unaware of," he said. "Now, we're tapping into that and getting our name out into the community. Our students are able to participate, and most importantly, the community gets to come out here and support. All too often, we ask our parents and our students to sell things or to give more money. Now, it's good that we're reaching out to the community and offer an event where they can be a part of something really, really cool and support our music program going to London."
Koskoski said this will be the school's first time going to London to participate in this invitation-only event.

At the inaugural event, which was hosted by Stonewood Grill and Tavern and Peach Valley Cafes and presented by Advanced Urology Institute and Chris and Charlie Lydecker, aquatic gear was available to rent through Odyssey Adventure Club. Sophie's Circle Dog Rescue and Great Dawg Rescue had pups available for adoption at the event as well.
