The Ormond Beach Lions donated $1,000 to the Seabreeze High School band to help the Marching 100 and symphony orchestra perform in London next year.
The SHS groups have been invited to march in the 2019 London's New Year's Day Parade. The orchestra was invited to perform at Cadogan Hall, home of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. After living in Ormond Beach for the past 30 years, Al and Fran Murdock decided to downsize and move to Latitude Margaritaville, becoming one of the first couples to move into the 55 and over community inspired by one of Jimmy Buffet's greatest hits.
On Thursday, July 26, the couple were not expecting to be visited by Buffet in their new home, but that's exactly what happened. After Buffet read a poem written by Al Murdock about their love of Latitude Margaritaville, provided to Buffet by the Murdocks' neighbor Kelley Sarantis, Buffet knocked on the couple's home. After he introduced himself as Jimmy Buffet, Fran Murdock said, "You're not really Jimmy Buffet."
But Buffet took off his sunglasses and said yes, indeed he was.
Buffet visited with the couple for about 15-20 minutes, and the Murdocks were pleased that he took the time to get to know them.
"The meeting was all too short, and I'm looking forward to many more visits with our new neighbor and friend, Jimmy Buffet," Al Murdock wrote.
Bull Run Farm Supply, Inc. donated 1,000 pounds of dog food to the Halifax Humane Society on Thursday, Aug. 2.
The donation was made on behalf of the Atlantic Federated Republican Women’s Club in Ormond Beach.
United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties recently announced the addition of eight board members, as well as Sam Willet as the new board chair. Willet will take over the position previously held by Ormond Beach City Manager Joyce Shanahan, who was thanked for her service in the nonprofit's latest newsletter.

The city of Ormond Beach is inviting the public to attend a reception to welcome its new fire chief, Richard Sievers, at 6-7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the Ormond Beach City Hall Atrium, located at 22 S. Beach St.
Sievers is coming to the city with almost 40 years of experience, having begun his career with the city of Lauderhill in 1979. For the last 14 years, he served as the fire chief for the Broward Sheriff's Office. He will begin serving the city on Monday, Aug. 13.
