For Mainland girls basketball player Isys Grady, receiving a college scholarship at this point in her playing career was the furthest thing from her mind. But on Saturday, Aug. 10, Division I program Eastern Michigan University extended an offer to the Buccaneers' sophomore center.
"I didn't expect to receive an offer this early," said Grady, who, in addition to playing center, also saw stints at forward and guard as a freshman. "But I'm glad I did. It relieved some of the tension of me worrying about playing so hard and not getting an offer."
Grady had been in contact with Eagles head coach Fred Castro and assistant coach Carlos Adamson. Grady said both coaches told her that they were impressed with how she played in tournaments in Louisville and Atlanta during the summer. Both coaches were stricken with her consistency, her ability to attack the basket and her knack for getting rebounds.
They said they liked the performance in her tournaments in Louisville and Atlanta. Her consistency, how she could attack the basket and how she freed herself up for rebounds.
Grady averaged 13.3 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.8 steals, 1 block and 1 assist per game in 28 games during the 2017-18 season with the Buccaneers.
"It feels good," she said of her first offer. "I played my butt off in July."
