Cypress Head Golf Club revenue took a hit because of cold and rainy weather this year, but it may see an uptick soon thanks to philanthropic events, junior programs and a new restaurant.

Bob Duquette, general manager and lead golf professional for the city-owned golf club, reported lower revenue than projected to the Port Orange City Council.

Wet conditions reduced the number of rounds played and restricted golf cart paths, however maintenance staff worked diligently this week to resolve the issues.

“Everything is back in good condition,” Duquette said.

He hopes that good conditions, coupled with continued success of junior programs and special events, will make up for the loss.

Its “well-attended” summer camp, where Cypress Head staff teach children ages 16 and younger golf basics, wrapped up in July, but the club will resume weekend programs.

Also, children ages 16 and younger accompanied by an adult can play for free until Aug. 31., and they get free range tokens.

More families are coming to play because of this program, Duquette said.

“It’s awesome to see younger people involved because this is a game they can play forever,” he said. “Children are energetic, and they have a unique perspective. It’s good to see what they see.”

Also, the practice area is lit throughout the winter months, typically from November to March.

Duquette said the golf club’s new restaurant is bringing more people to the course as well.

Flagsticks at Cypress Head, an independently-owned restaurant and bar, opened in April.

Its daily deals and regular events, such as karaoke nights and prime rib days, are popular with locals, Duquette said.

Benefits go both ways —golfers typically stay after their games to eat or drink at the restaurant, and foodies express interest in or book tee times after learning more about the golf course, he said.

The restaurant, which seats more than 150 people, also is a good venue for special events.

Duquette said the club frequently partners with local organizations to host fundraisers and is home to city-sponsored tournaments.

The club has events planned through the end of the year, including the 2018 Port Orange City Championships on Sept. 8 and 9.

Registration and payment for this event is due Aug. 31.

Also, the club is hosting the “It’s All About Kaeleigh” Golf Tournament on Sept. 29 to raise funds for a young cancer patient.

Three events are slated for October, with another in November and one in December.

The club, its programs and events are open to the public.
