A small part of Causeway Park’s tidal waters may soon be cleared of a deteriorating boat.
The city’s grant manager requested permission to apply for a grant from the Florida Inland Navigation District for Small-Scale Derelict Vessel Removal Program and for the Volusia County Coastal Division - Inlet and Port District Derelict Vessel Removal Grant, which would cover the cost to remove the boat.
Each program will pay for 50% of removal costs, which means if both grants are awarded, the cost of removing and disposing the boat, estimated at $8,100 by a local boat removal company, Sea Tow, will be covered completely.
However, the city will need to cover half the removal costs if only one grant is awarded.
The vessel is located on the north side of the Dunlawton Bridge Causeway, near a small boat ramp used by sailors and fishermen.
City staff thinks the boat hull, which is all that remains of the boat after it was damaged in a fire, is not only unsightly but also is polluting the ecosystem of mangroves with its debris, oil and fuel.
When removed, the surrounding mangroves will not be affected, according to the city, and any environmental fuels and oils will also be cleaned.
Once removed, the vessel will be taken to a regulated landfill.
