Port Orange resident Kim White grew up playing soccer. But her passion isn't playing the game. It's teaching the game. To help her accomplish her goal, White, who also teaches fourth grade at Spruce Creek Elementary, watched hours of YouTube videos on how to coach soccer.
She’s coached her son Logan’s team since he was a toddler, and on the afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 14, White celebrated her first game coaching a 10-and-under team with a 2-1 win and her son scoring the decisive goal.
“It’s so exciting. All these kids, they come, they give 100%, they work hard, they do anything I ask them to do,” White said. “You can’t ask for anything more than that.”
"I’m not just teaching them the skills; I want them to have fun. I want them to walk away with some skills. And I want them to come back. I try to make practices fun, so they’re communicating and learning the life lessons that they’ll need."

White isn’t from Port Orange. She was born and raised in Pennsylvania but has lived in Port Orange for the past 18 years. The city’s Parks and Recreation youth sports programs have been an integral part of her and her family’s life here. In addition to soccer, White also volunteers with the baseball programs.
“I love the Rec,” she said. “I feel like they do a fabulous job of running a great program for kids, and that’s why I like to keep coming back to it.”
