Publix in The Trails proposed to be redeveloped, will remain in shopping center

Though not much is known at this time about the new store, it will incorporate the old CVS building.

The Publix in The Trails Shopping Center could get a total renovation in the near future as plans to demolish the existing structure and rebuild a new store in the same place reach Ormond Beach's site plan review committee on Wednesday, Aug. 22.

Planning Director Steven Spraker said his understanding is that aside from rebuilding the store, the plans include incorporating the now-vacant former CVS building in the shopping center into the new store. Michael Carroll, CEO of ShopOne Centers REIT Inc. and new owner of The Trails Shopping Center, said it was still early in the planning process but that the goal is to have a larger, modern Publix onsite.

As the new owner of the shopping center, Carroll said he is committed to investing in the property.

"I would hope that in a couple years from now that the community has a much improved, more vibrant shopping center," Carroll said.

Aside from that, not much about the new store has been confirmed.

"We'll know more information after our SPRC meeting on Wednesday," Spraker said.

Although Spraker is not sure what the new store would look like, Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington shared an article by the Orlando Sentinel on Facebook earlier this month detailing plans for a "next-generation delivery-focused" store. According to the newspaper, that particular store is proposed to be smaller with a pick-up area for delivery services to compete with Amazon and Walmart.
