By the time the first group, comprised of No. 1-spot players Joseph Rizzo (FPC) and Erik Libby (Matanzas), finished their round in boys golf's season opener on the afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 21, a brooding storm was about eight miles from Palm Harbor Golf Club.
Cold wind and dark, rain-filled clouds chased the remaining golfer all the way to the ninth green and into the club house. Still, both teams managed to have four groups finish the nine-hole match — a golf team's total score is determined by said team's top-four scores. Flagler Palm Coast beat crosstown rival Matanzas by one shot.
The Bulldogs were led by Cameron Coates (42), Rizzo (45), Brock Underberg (50) and Chase Jones (52). Matanzas was paced by Erik Libby (42), Gabriel Gonzalez (44), Carlos Garris (54) and Jacob Allen (54). It was the only meeting between the two teams this season.
"I think it's a nice way to start off the week going into the Matanzas-FPC football game," Bulldogs coach Steve Collier said. "Hopefully, it leads to a couple more wins throughout the season."
