Sixteen players, including two seniors, played their first varsity game for Seabreeze on Friday, Aug. 24. The Sandcrabs lost to Spruce Creek 42-0 in the season-opener at Daytona Stadium.
The Sandcrabs gave up 212 yards and four rushing touchdowns to Spruce Creek running back Marvin Scott — all in the first half.
"Defensively, we’ve just got to tackle better," Sandcrabs coach Troy Coke said. "I mean, Marvin Scott, he’s a really good player, obviously. That’s kind of the name of the game: tackling the man with the ball.”
However, Coke said he was pleased with certain things on offense. He said his team lined up correctly and made few plays, but they weren't consistent enough.
"We had some things that were there at time, we just didn’t take advantage of it," he said. "The box score looks a lot worse than it was, I think.”
He added: “There was a lot of inexperience, and it showed. But there was a lot of correctable things.”
