The Port Orange United Church of Christ donated $2,600 to Spruce Creek Elementary School before the school year began to help purchase essentials, such as uniforms, shoes, socks, underwear, groceries and lunches. In November, the church will collect canned and dried food, as well as money to purchase gift certificates to help families purchase turkeys for Thanksgiving. In December, the church will also have an Angel Tree with more than 120 student names and clothing sizes so that each child can receive gifts for the holidays. Additionally, the church added two more mentors at the school. Currently, six church members meet with assigned students each week at lunch to help establish trust and confidence.
