The Flagler County Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the chamber’s Economic Alliance Council, hosted a “What is a smart community?” luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 22, at the Palm Coast Community Center. Representatives from the city of Palm Coast, Bunnell, Flagler Beach and Flagler County spoke at the event.
Wynn Newingham, head of innovation and economic growth in Palm Coast, talked about the use of a fiber, or strands of glass that transmit data through pulses of light, in the city.
“When we think about smart cities, one of the backbones that Palm Coast is doing is fiber," she said.
Palm Coast has had a municipal fiber system since 2007. It covers about 54 miles of the city and includes 124 connections.
The goal is become more efficient. Fiber is much faster than a traditional cable network. According to a survey done through Magellan Advisors, if you’re downloading a 2-hour movie, it could to up to 24 minutes to 5 minutes with cable. Where as, if you’re connected to fiber, it just takes about 25 seconds.
“Having technology that gets us better data makes us more efficient," Newingham said.
