After three years at the helm of Seabreeze High School's football team, head coach Troy Coke announced his resignation on the afternoon of Monday, Dec. 3, citing "spending more time with his family."
Coke, 40, and his wife celebrated the birth of a daughter late in 2017. This season was Coke's first with his daughter. He has no plans to coach football ever again.
"It's actually more of a retirement than a resignation," he said. "I'm hanging up the whistle so I can spend more time at home, more time with my family. It's as simple as that."
Coke spent two seasons (2013-14) as a defensive backs coach at Dr. Phillips in Orlando before coming to Seabreeze, where he spent a year as an assistant under Skip Saunier. Coke went 6-24 in his three seasons as head coach. The Sandcrabs finished 1-9 this fall and missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.
Coke said he'll go back to teaching biology to end this school year.
"I enjoyed my time here at Seabreeze," he said. "I always wanted to be a head coach, and I'm glad it was there. I wish the kids the best. I'll be cheering along next year — it just won't be from the sideline. Every coach reaches that time, and for me, it's over."
