Stetson student wins second place in worldwide entrepreneurship competition

Stetson University student Bryson Pritchard, of Ormond Beach, won $3,500 in a worldwide entrepreneurship competition recently held in Kansas City, Missouri, where he placed second for his idea of a medical device to make trauma centers across the U.S. more efficient and with less potential risks for patients.

The Collegiate Entrepreneurship Organization's Annual Pitch Competition featured 150 students from around the world. According to a press release, CEO is the largest student entrepreneurship group that gives nearly 1,000 college-level students an opportunity to attend the annual conference, network with others, participate in business competitions, and meet and receive mentorship from experts. 

Pritchard is currently a sophomore at Stetson, and, is majoring in molecular biology with a minor in entrepreneurship. Two other Stetson students — Zachary Harshbarger and Matt San Julian — made it into the semi-final round of the competition. Harshbarger advanced into the finals.

Halifax Humane Society renews partnership with adoption program

The Halifax Humane Society has received its second grant from the Dolly's Dream Adoption Program, which aids in finding homes for bully breed dogs by helping to equip their future adopters with essential tools to make a smoother transition into their forever homes. Adoption fees will also be waived, and, all dogs will be up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed or neutered and have been microchipped.

Thanks to the grant, adopters will be given a slew of pet owner essentials, including a training crate, a no-pull harness with leash, a branded collar, food and water bowls and a 30-pound bag of food. The program began on Nov. 26, and will run until May. 27. DAR welcomes new members

The Captain James Ormond Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution added two new members at its November Meeting:

Heather Eaton and Greta Langhenry.

The DAR honors and preserves the legacy of patriot ancestors in their members family trees. Any woman 18 and older who can prove lineal, blood line descent from one of these ancestors is eligible to join. The DAR supports historic preservation, promotion of education and patriotic endeavors, according to their website. Rotary Club collecting donations for Provision Packs 

The Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach is distributing holiday cards to local businesses asking patrons to help feed the hungry; all donations will be given to Provision Packs, a local organization that feeds over 200 Ormond Beach children. 

People will be able to donate any amount of money they wish to, and, sign a holiday card to encourage others to follow in their footsteps. According to a press release, Provision Packs can provide children with $20-worth of food for only $5, thanks to volunteers, business sponsorships and a partnership with Second Harvest. Each Friday at school, the kids receive a bag with enough food to provide meals through the weekend. 

The holiday cards feature a snowman and the Rotary gear logo. They will be displayed in restaurants, bars, grocery stores and other businesses around Ormond Beach and Volusia County.
