Over 400 people completed the third-annual Chuck Strasser Memorial Candy Cake 5K on Saturday, Dec. 15, at Destination Daytona, with 100% of race entrances fees going to support adoption of local children.
The event is a memorial fundraiser for the work of the late Chuck Strasser, who lived in the Daytona Beach area and died on January 1, 2015, due to cancer. As the Strassers hope to leave a legacy honoring his vision to help children all over the world, funds raised will help local adoption efforts, including placing orphans in adoptive homes through Tomoka Christian Church's Bringing Children Home ministry.
Ormond resident Constance Jones recently raised $500 to help local children with special needs have a merry Christmas with her
organization's second-annual Reindeer Dash Poker Run held on Dec. 8.
Jones, who runs the nonprofit organization, Children R Our Future, themed the fundraiser around a "Christmas for our special kind of perfect children." There were two different poker runs this year — one starting in DeLand, and one in Holly Hill.
Third-generation Hawaiian oil painter Roy Tabora will introduce a collection of 12 paintings at the Ocean Art Gallery during his opening reception on Tuesday, Jan. 8. It will be his first visit to the Daytona Beach area, according to a press release by the gallery.
Tabora, famous for his translucent seascapes, will speak at the Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art in Daytona Beach at 2:30 p.m., on Jan. 8. His presentation will be titled, "Inspired – The Life of An Artist." Call 255-0285 for more information.
The "Reflections of Paradise" opening reception is free and open to the public. It will take place from 5-8 p.m. at the Ocean Art Gallery, located at 197 E. Granada Blvd.
The Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach recently donated $300 to the Victim's Services Coalition of the 7th Judicial Circuit. thanks to the club's Happy Dollars collection.
Rotary Club President Becky Parker presented the check to Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey after he spoke to members about the Police Department and crime in the Ormond Beach area.
