Jan Lemus, the Matanzas High School Teacher of the Year, gets to work with students of all grade levels while teaching Spanish II, intensive reading and English for speakers of other languages.
She’s been a member of the Pirate crew for 14 years, with 19 years at Flagler Palm Coast High School before that.
Lemus said she likes to use technology to enhance the students’ language and cultural experiences in the classroom.
“I like students to be able to see first-hand the exciting places where the world languages are spoken,” she said. “I want my students to be able to feel as though they have traveled the world in the classroom.”
She added that she frequently shares anecdotal experiences of her own family when they arrived in the United States.
“For my English language learners, I teach them English so that they will become successful citizens in this great country,” she said.
In addition to teaching, Lemus enjoys line dancing, Latin music and dancing the salsa, merengue and bachata.
“Teaching for me is not just academics, but students know that I am always available when they have a problem,” she said. “I think I was chosen as Teacher of the Year because teaching is not a job for me, but a lifelong passion.
