As a seventh-grade civics teacher, the Indian Trails Middle School Teacher of the Year, Katie Hoover, believes it’s her job to build the future generation of American citizens through her coursework.
She is also the head cross country coach with the Police Athletic League’s partnership with ITMS.
“As a teacher and a coach, I live by the principle of leading from the front,” Hoover said. “To me, this adage means to be a role model in all that I do. At Indian Trails, this means doing whatever it takes to help all students achieve at their highest level. I guide students to become purposeful and motivated learners, setting and working toward meaningful goals.”
A little-known fact is that Hoover grew up attending YMCA Camp Fitch, so she’s been working with kids since she was a kid herself.
The Mustang runners have taken great strides in the last two seasons, she said, as the boys have come out victorious with the Flagler County championships, with the girls close behind.
“As the founder and head coach of the Indian Trails Cross Country team, I have built it into a highly successful and competitive program based on five core principles: self-discipline, meaningful goals, positive thinking, commitment and the power of team.”
She said the boys team qualified and competed at the Florida Youth Running Association State Championship the last two years.
“The many athletic successes and helped increase student athletes’ self-confidence, giving them the courage to be leaders in the classroom,” she said.
