Seeded No. 6 heading into the district tournament, Matanzas took down No. 3 seed Orange Park 5-1 in the district opener on Jan. 29, setting up a semifinal showdown with No. 2 seed Ponte Vedra on Wednesday, Jan. 31.
At the end of regulation, both teams were tied 1-1, forcing two ten-minute sudden death, golden goal overtime periods. Pirates forward Louis Alvarez missed a shot with 30 seconds left to send the game to penalty kicks.
Senior captains Nathan Hubbs and Zachary Verdi converted their penalty kicks, and goal keeper Brandt Herron denied four Ponte Vedra attempts to give the Pirates the win over the 2016 state champions.
However, the Pirates then faced the undefeated Ridgeview Panthers, the No. 2-ranked team in all of Class 3A soccer, in the district final on Friday, Feb. 2.
The Panthers won on penalty kicks in overtime.
