Armed with left hooks, right jabs and rapid-fire punches, couples got down and sweaty during a partners kickboxing class at Fight Fit in Ormond Beach on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
“People go through marriages and through relationships, and I feel like that’s already hard enough to do,” Fight Fit Coach Paige Glovers said. “So, this creates teamwork and encouragement.”
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, about a dozen people — made up of relationships, marriages, a mother and son, and a father and daughter — threw punches at punching bags and did countless burpees, squats, suicide sprints and other exercises during an intense, hour-long workout.
This is the first year Fight Fit has held the couples workout, said owner Dominique Simmons.
“It’s an opportunity to bring their significant other to a workout,” Simmons said. “They know that their partner is gone for an hour out of the day working out, so this gives them an insight into the kind of workout they’re doing.”
Ormond Beach resident Victoria Buckley and Palm Coast resident Jared Owen have only been dating for about two months, but the pair enjoyed pushing themselves and encouraging each other through the workout.
“It definitely shows a lot of vulnerability and trust,” Buckley said.
Nearly four years of dating allowed Ormond Beach residents Nigel Smith and Becky Rohmeyer to be in sync during the workout.
“It’s pretty good for teamwork,” Rohmeyer said. “You see how well you work together.”
Simmons said Fight Fit would love to host the class again, as well as try it out at the studio’s South Daytona location.
