After conducting a traffic stop on a 42-year-old Ormond Beach man who was riding his bicycle against the flow of traffic in the 600 block of West Granada Boulevard, police ended up arresting him for carrying a portable methamphetamine lab in his backpack on Monday, Feb 12.
Police report Gary Beatty knocked his bike over when stopped, denting and scratching the officer's passenger side door on his cruiser. The officer noted he was standoffish and appeared to be extremely nervous, more so than the average person. The portable meth lab was found after a K-9 alerted officers to the presence of narcotics.
As police investigated his backpack, Beatty attempted to flee the scene but was caught. The portable meth lab was dismantled by the Volusia County Clandestine Methamphetamine Lab Team, and Beatty taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail. This is his 11th arrest since 2004.
