The Bulldogs’ girls soccer team’s bid for a state championship officially came to an end. FPC lost to Buchhloz 3-2 in double overtime in the Class 5A regional semifinal on the night of Friday, Feb. 9, in Gainesville. The Bulldogs rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second half, tying the game with seven minutes to spare.
Buchholz scored the game-winner in the second overtime period.
The Bulldogs finished the season with a record of 20-3-2.
Dru Bowens, Matanzas
Bowens — a 6-foot-4, 210 outside linebacker/defensive end for the Pirates — signed with East Tennessee State. Bowens, who transferred to Matanzas following his junior year at Flagler Palm Coast, led the Pirates with 11.5 sacks. East Tennessee State is a Division I FCS program that plays in the Southern Conference. In 2017, the Buccaneers went 4-7 in their third year under head coach Carl Torbush. Randy Sanders was hired to replace Torbush in December.
Norman Brown, FPC
Brown elected to play his college football at Garden City Community College in Kansas. The 6-foot-3, 265-pound defensive tackle was an integral interior presence for the Bulldogs’ defense, totaling 23 tackles-for-loss on the season.
Jarrett Patton, Matanzas
Bowens’ partner along the defensive line, fellow defensive end Jarrett Patton signed with Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tennessee. Patton, also an FPC transfer, finished second for the Matanzas sack lead with 11. He also added 67 tackles and 11 tackles-for-loss. Carson-Newman is a Division II program that plays in the South Atlantic Conference.
Samuel Petrin, FPC
The Bulldogs’ kicker signed his letter of intent to play for Central Methodist in Fayette, Missouri. Petrin went 5-for-9 on field goals in 2017, including a long of 35 yards. Central Methodist is a Division I NAIA program that play in the Heart of America Conference.
Isaiah Stubbs, FPC
The 5-foot-10, 145-pound speedster will be taking his talents to Lake Wales to play for the Warner Royals, a Division II NAIA program that competes in The Sun Conference. Stubbs totaled 11 receptions for 149 yards and one touchdown in 2017.
A midfielder and team captain for the Bulldogs, Saba Amiri signed to play college soccer for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The Eagles are a Division II NAIA program that plays in the the Sun Conference. Fellow team captain Julia Lombardo also signed her letter of intent to play for the North Florida Ospreys — a Division I program in the Atlantic Sun Conference — in Jacksonville.
The Pirates' Curtis Payne signed his letter of intent to bowl next season at Huntington University in Indiana. Huntington is an NAIA school that competes in the Crossroads League.
