A claim has been filed with Port Orange's insurance company after a police car crashed into two vehicles outside Boat Bar on Saturday, Feb. 10.

The Port Orange police officer was traveling north in his vehicle in the outside lane on S. Ridgewood Avenue approaching Niver Street, according to the Florida Highway Patrol incident report.

As the officer approached Niver Street, he began to brake and attempted to make a right turn onto the road. However, the vehicle did not stay in the lane and ran off the roadway to the left into the parking lot next to Boat Bar before colliding with the rear of a parked vehicle that was unoccupied.

The vehicle then collided into the left side of a third parked vehicle that was also unoccupied.

The officer stated that he had been responding to a call and had his emergency equipment activated.

According to Sergeant Kim Montes, FHP public affairs officer, the police officer, who was on duty at the time, was estimated to be traveling at a speed of 40 miles per hour. The speed limit is 45 miles per hour.

According to Police Chief Thomas Grimaldi, since he has been chief, there have not yet been any driving courses for officers. However, he did note that about a week and half before the incident took place he made plans with the county to set up a course for officers later in the year.

No injuries were reported.
