It was an afternoon of self-guided meditation for the Ormond Beach residents that took some time out of their day to walk the painted labyrinth in the gazebo at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum gardens on Saturday.
Gayle Woodley was one of them. It was her first time doing this form of walking meditation, and she said she went a little too fast and got a bit dizzy. She's eager to do it again on a less crowded occasion to fully experience it at her own pace.
"I'll definitely come during a quieter time because first of all, where it is, is so peaceful and wonderful," Woodley said.
The labyrinth was painted by Ormond Beach artists Joan Baliker and Carol Bertrand. Baliker said labyrinths date back more than 3,500 years and the circular symbols were found in every culture and religion. After a lecture by a California minister named Lauren Artress, Baliker was inspired to facilitate this type of walking meditation in Ormond Beach.
She hopes people come alive with questions after walking it's seven rings.
"It awakens your intuition — your inner guide, which I call your intuition," Baliker said. "It can be called God, it can be called your angel self."
