After a large American flag was stolen from the Indian Trails Sports Complex in Palm Coast on Monday, Feb. 26, deputies have finally found their serial flag thief, according to a news release by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies assisted Charles Cowart Jr. in catching two horses running down County Road 305. After the horses were retrieved, Cowart told deputies that he had “something to show them” at his residence. Cowart went into his residence and came out with the flag that was stolen from the sports complex. Cowart was also in possession of 11 other flags that had been reported stolen from various locations within Flagler County over the past two years.
Cowart has a long arrest history in the area, including aggravated assault, contempt of court, shoplifting, burglary, kidnapping, disorderly intoxication, cruelty to animals and DUI.
Added to the list: Cowart was arrested and charged with felony violation of probation, petit theft and grand theft.
He is being held in the Flagler County Detention Facility without bond.
“This guy obviously had a guilty conscience,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in a release. “Our deputies went above and beyond to assist him, and I’d like to believe that is why he felt the need to come clean and return the stolen property. We will not tolerate any form of theft in Flagler County. I’m glad that the flags were returned to their rightful owners. I look forward to seeing the flags back up in the air where they belong.”
