Q: Why do you think you've been awarded Teacher of the Year?

A: It’s not just me; I’m just an example of everybody’s input. I model off of other teachers I’ve seen. I can’t take all the credit. I think it’s everybody — everybody has a little input, everybody has a little something that’s of value that we tend to copy.

Q: Why do you love teaching?

A: It’s been something that I’ve been wanting to do for most of my life. I realized that I was pretty good at helping. I started off helping people I worked with with their homework from outside of the school atmosphere, and I had a knack for that, so that’s why I decided to become a teacher.

Q: How long have you been teaching (at OKES specifically and in general)? What's your position title?

A: 16 years teaching total. 12 years at OKES. Sixth grade math and science.

Q: How would you describe your teaching style? What's unique about you and your classroom that could have contributed to you earning Teacher of the Year?

A: I’m teaching pretty much from the time they come here, until the time they leave, nonstop. There’s a lot of information we have to make sure they get, digest and understand, so it’s pretty much 100% all day long. You have to have certain rules, otherwise it’s chaos. But I do have a rapport with them. I bring it down to their level. We joke around; I try to keep it fun. Math can be boring sometimes.
