It's a new year, and the Port Orange Regional Library is helping local children get a jumpstart on their eduction with two book clubs to promote learning and encourage reading at a young age.
The Family Book Club is for children up to second grade, along with their parents, and will include discussion and activities. The first book that will be read is "Thunder Boy Jr.," by Sherman Alexie.
Lauren Bridges, head of youth services for the Port Orange Regional Library, said the clubs enable children to meet students from different schools. She noted that it allows for them to enjoy reading without the pressure of a quiz or test.
"Not a lot of libraries do a book club where it's for the families to talk about," Bridges said. "We encourage parents to talk during it, and it's a good model for them on how to talk about books when they're at home, too."
Youth Services Librarian Laura Armstrong said, "The hope is that we're kind of helping to guide them and give them ideas of how they can talk to their kids when they're reading a book together."
The second club, the 3rd-5th Grade Book Club, which began on Wednesday, Jan. 3, will incorporate books from the Sunshine State list of books. The first two books that will be discussed within the group are "My Brother is a Superhero," by David Solomons, and "The Hero Two Doors Down," by Sharon Robinson.
