Among the items stolen by a thief — or group of thieves — burglarizing cars in the S-Section Jan. 3 was a briefcase containing a copy of the Bible.

That incident occurred on Sleeping Beauty Place, where a man called Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies at about 2:35 p.m. after he walked outside to move his plants out of the cold and realized that someone had broken into his unlocked Kia Sorento.

Papers and other belongings were strewn around the car, and at first the victim didn't realize anything had been stolen: His golf clubs were still there, as was a GPS unit. Later, he noticed that his briefcase, holding a copy of the Bible, was gone. The briefcase was worth about $25; the victim listed the Bible as "free."

The burglary was one of about a dozen car break-ins and thefts that occurred in the S-Section on streets including Sleeping Beauty Place, Sea Shark Path, Sea Spiral Path, Sleigh Bell Place, Sellner Place, Smith Trail, Slumberland Path, Sea Side Court and Sloganeer Trail.

In some cases, the burglar or burglars broke into a vehicle but didn't steal anything.

In an incident on Sleepy Hollow Trail, a resident reported finding an open suitcase on the side of the road with its contents — including an iPhone, jewelry and clothing — strewn across the ground.

A deputy investigating the case determined that the suitcase had been stolen from a car on the same street, and that a few items, including $150 in jewelry and a Versace cosmetics bag containing $150 in perfume, had been stolen from the suitcase. The owner said she'd left her car locked. The car was not damaged.

In other cases, stolen items included sunglasses, cash, a phone, a wallet, gas cards and, in one case, vehicle registration papers.

On Sea Spiral Path, a suspect stole a car from a driveway as its owner left it running to warm up. The thief ran over a mailbox and ditched the car in Daytona Beach. Deputies found it and returned it to its owner.

On Sea Side Court, a woman reported that he car had been removed from her driveway and parked in the road, and that the rear view mirror had been removed.

A surveillance camera caught video of a male opening car doors on Sleepy Hollow Drive, and the Sheriff's Office posted the photo on its Facebook page and has asked anyone with information on these cases to call the Sheriff's Office at 386-313-4911 and mention case 2018-00836.
