Sarah Webster first moved to Central Florida in 1983, when Madeline Avenue was nothing more than a dirt road off Clyde Morris Boulevard. She also remembers Nova Road being a narrow two-lane roadway.
"I used to drive down from Ormond Beach in December to see the maple and gum trees with fall colors of red, yellow and burgundy," Webster said.
As for restaurants, there was Captain Coty's, with their signature sticky rolls, off Clyde Morris. A gym has now taken the place of the restaurant.
Sweetwater's restaurant on the Halifax was another place where Webster liked to eat and see the river.
There was Biscuits 'n' Gravy at Nova Road and Madeline Avenue, and it's a restaurant Webster says has been sorely missed. She noted that it was burned to the ground with the intention of being rebuilt, but the property still sits empty.
Finally, there's the library.
"I remember when the Port Orange branch of the Volusia County Public Library was housed in the Riverwood Shopping Center — on the far north end," Webster said. "Then it moved into the second floor of City Hall, which it outgrew, and finally got its own building across the street on City Center Circle."
