The dogs running across the ice and chasing each other may have been having as much, or more, fun than the people at the ice skating rink.
On Wednesday, Jan. 10, the Daytona International Skateway opened up the rink for two and half hours to let 162 dogs and their owners enjoy a dog park on ice. About $2,400 was raised to benefit the Halifax Humane Society.
Wednesday's dog park theme was Aloha Luau, meaning many of the four-legged attendees were dressed in grass skirts, leis and a number of other colorful outfits for a costume contest.
Rosemarie Romano and Vinnie Romano have attended the event three or four times with their dog Sadie.
"We just absolutely adore this," Rosemarie said. "We usually stay for the whole thing."
This was the fourth time Jen Adams, who brought her dog Brie, had been to the event.
"We love to support Halifax Humane Society," Adams said.
This was John Schmitz and his dog Sugo's third time at the event.
"Sugo has a great time with it," Schmitz said. "She loves running around on the ice. She likes the cold, and she's incredibly social, so it's fun for her."
Mayra Rivas and her dog Alana were experiencing the event for the first time.
"It's cute thinking that they can be on the ice," Rivas said. "She's so happy here."
According to Halifax Humane Society Community Outreach Director Barry KuKes, the event is held twice a year, once in January and once in July.
