Portraits by kindergarteners to be put on display at ArtHaus

ArtHaus will present the annual “Wee Create; Kindergarten Only” exhibit composed of selected kindergarten artwork from 12-plus area Volusia County elementary schools.

The collection of self-portraits, family portraits and pet portraits will be on display from Thursday, Jan, 18 through Friday, Feb. 9. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the ArtHaus Gallery, 3840 S. Ridgewood Avenue.

Western-themed play comes to Port Orange Library

Local playwright Karen Poulsen will pay tribute to the cowboy life with her original play “The Prairie Prankster,” which will be presented six times in January and February. 

The free performances will begin at 2 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle, Port Orange

Pinewood derby workshop to be included with winter camp

A winter campout and pinewood derby workshop hosted by Cub Scout Pack 436 will take place from 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, through 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, at the Spruce Creek Park and Campground, 6250 S Ridgewood Ave. A table saw will be provided at the camp to start cutting out car designs. Attendees are asked to bring fishing gear and hiking boots.

Flags to be retired during ceremony 

At 4:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, first responders and members of local veterans groups will retire the U.S. flag that has flown over the Volusia Memorial Funeral Home for many years. Residents can also bring their unfit or unusable U.S. flags to the ceremony to be retired as well. 

The event will take place at the Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 4815 Clyde Morris Boulevard.
