Charles Knoll and his son, Colin, have brought a bit of Australia to South Daytona at G’Day Café, 2800 S. Nova Road.
Open for breakfast and lunch each day except Monday and dinner on Friday and Saturday, they offer a wide variety of American fare but also have opportunities to enjoy cuisine from “down under, “ such as meat pies, sausage rolls and Aussie burgers. Desserts include the lamington, a sponge cake rolled in Hershey’s chocolate and then coconut.
Many people stop by just for the coffee and one of their cakes, they said. The coffee beans, Arabica soaked in hazelnut, are shipped monthly from Australia. Colin, a master barista, roasts and prepares the coffee at the café.
Visitors can also sample vegemite, the popular sandwich spread in Australia.
“As soon as babies get off the bottle in Australia, they start eating vegemite on toast,” the dad said.
The family moved to the area from Niagara Falls, where they had managed a motel for 11 years. Knoll said that he and his son have 50 years combined experience in the hospitality industry.
“Hospitality and service, that’s what we are,” he said.
He said they are happy to be in this area, where they don’t have to “shovel snow twice a day.” He points out that the South Florida climate is very similar to Australia.
After moving in a few months ago, the family spent five weeks remodeling the location for their restaurant. They make their meat pies by hand, but have started a GoFundMe page to raise money for a machine that will help them keep up with the demand.

U.S. flag to be retired
The United States flag that has flown over Volusia Memorial Funeral Home for many years will be ceremoniously retired in a ceremony open to the public at 4:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 22, 2018, at the funeral home, 4815 Clyde Morris Blvd, Port Orange.
The public is invited to bring unfit or unusable U.S. flags to the funeral home prior to the ceremony or on the day of the event for their retirement, according to a press release.
The ceremony will be performed by representatives from veterans’ organizations and first responders and will include patriotic music, refreshments and a reflection from Port Orange Mayor Donald O. Burnette.

Greek youth donate to hospital
High school students who are members of the Greek Orthodox Youth of America recently made a donation of $1,635 to Halifax Health – Foundation. The youth group is the ministry to teenagers of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America for the purpose of fellowship, worship, service and witness. Halifax Health - Foundation is the charitable gift receiving agency of Halifax Health.
Rice named top lawyer
Rice Law Firm’s managing Partner, Paul E. Rice Jr., has been selected once again as a member of The National Advocates: Top 100 Lawyers. The professional organization is composed of the top 100 attorneys in each state. Members are selected for their leadership, reputation, influence and performance, according to a press release. Rice is board certified as a specialist in divorce and family law.
