A pair of Daytona Beach-area teenagers stole a car, broke into vehicles in Palm Coast's K-Section and then crashed the stolen car into a ditch in Bunnell the morning of Jan. 12, according to a Flagler County Sheriff's Office news release.
The suspects — 18-year-old Jaylan Braswell and a 16-year-old whose name has not been printed because he is a minor — have been arrested and charged with grand theft auto, burglary of a conveyance, and grand theft over $300. The 16-year-old is also being charged with probation violation: He was out on post-commitment probation for a previous arrest.
Deputies caught the two after trying to stop a stolen Nissan Altima before 5 a.m. Jan. 12. The car sped off, then crashed into a ditch on Panda Bear Lane in Bunnell.
Witnesses saw two people run from the car. Deputies set up a perimeter, tracked the pair to the 5000 block of County Road 305 and took them into custody at about 9:30 a.m.
Deputies who searched the car found marijuana and items that belonged to people whose cars had been burglarized overnight in the K-Section, according to the news release.
“This was great police work on the part of our deputies,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in the news release. “Not only did they locate the stolen vehicle, but they were able to track the suspects, arrest them and solve burglaries. This is another example of a broken juvenile justice system and why 'home confinement' of youthful offenders does not work and leads to them becoming adult offenders."
