Spruce Creek High School student Abby Lorden usually turns to photography when it comes to art. However, when one of her teachers asked the students to participate in a logo contest for the upcoming Riverfest on the Halifax event, Lorden found herself named the winning contestant.

"I was shocked because I don't really win art contest, so it was pretty exciting," Lorden said. "It was an honor."

The Riverfest logo contest was set up to use artwork created by a student as part of the marketing campaign for the inaugural event, which will take place May4 -6 at Riverwalk Park. Riverfest is a collaborative effort between the Port Orange South Daytona Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Port Orange South Daytona.

In October 2017, Loren's art teacher, Joseph VandenBerg, challenged Lorden and her classmates to come up with a digital design that would be submitted to the contest.

VandenBerg had already been teaching the students about various programs that create logos. He gave the students a basic template and asked for them to come up with a list of words that were related to the event, such as kayaking, food and fun. Lorden used the word cloud generator, Tagul, to create a cluster of words that she fit into the image of a crab, an image she felt went with the Riverfest theme.

Friday, Oct. 13 was the deadline and about a week later Lorden was told she had won the contest. A few tweaks, such as color and word changes, and the logo was ready to be used.

"I was just as surprised as she was," VandenBerg said. "I was very proud of her."
