The Atlantic Sharks were in control for almost the entire game.
With just under two minutes to play, the Sharks' Da'Jhai White swished a 3-pointer from the right corner to give Atlantic an eight-point lead over Mainland.
The Lady Buccaneers, however, fought back. Mainland forced two turnovers in the final minute and connected on several field goals to cut Atlantic's lead to just two points. The Buccaneers had the chance to tie or take the lead with fewer than 15 seconds remaining in the game, but a turnover gave the Sharks the ball back.
Atlantic held on against Mainland, winning 53-49 on the night of Friday, Jan. 19, at Mainland High School.
"It was a really, really good game," Mainland coach Arthur Westbrook said. "I'm proud of my girls. We missed a lot of shots. We missed free throws. We'll go back to practice and get ready for when we play them again."
Mainland has a rematch against Atlantic at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Atlantic High School.
The Seabreeze boys soccer team has officially concluded its regular season.
The Sandcrabs knocked off Tavares 8-0 on Friday, Jan. 19, and DeLand 2-0 on Monday, Jan. 22, to finish the 2017-18 season with a 12-2-4 record. The Sandcrabs’ only losses were to Seminole and Spruce Creek. Seabreeze, which went undefeated on its way to a state title during their 2016-17 campaign, now begins district play.
The Mainland Buccaneers’ girls soccer team concluded the 2017-18 regular season with an 8-0 loss to DeLand on Monday, Jan. 22, at DeLand High School. The Lady Buccaneers finished the regular season with a 5-11 record and were 0-4 in district play. The Buccaneers’ last win was a 3-1 victory over Taylor on Thursday, Jan. 18, at Taylor High School.
The boys team, which is 2-10-2 on the season, has two games left on its schedule, both on the road against Taylor (Jan. 23) and Pine Ridge (Jan. 25).
