It was a full day of book-related discussions and workshops to help students have a better understanding of what it takes to be a published author and how they could achieve their own writing goals.

The Warrior Writers event at Silver Sands Middle School on Friday, Jan. 26, brought in seven book authors that spoke to students about creative writing, plot development and what it takes to get a book published. The event has been held for the past six or seven years, according to Kristina Circelli, one of the authors who spoke at the school.

Circelli, who has 21 published novels, said the event is a way for students to have a conversation about their own writing while at the same time encouraging them to do what they love.

Circelli said she hopes the students will want to write more after hearing from the different authors.

"A lot of times, kids are told they can't do something, to get their head out of the clouds," Circelli said. "We get to show them it's possible, you can do this too."

Students spent the morning participating in a panel-style discussion with the authors who spoke about their experience before answering students' questions. In the afternoon, students selected by teachers were able to be a part of hands-on workshops that let them  work on their writing with the authors.

Cindy Circelli, Silver Sands sixth-grade language arts teacher, said she has already seen the impact that the event has made on students. She noted that the authors inspire students to write and use their creative minds.  In addition, she said that there has been an increase in students entering writing contests for poetry and essays.

Cindy added that Warrior Writers has made some students aspire to become authors. One student even told her that writing has increased his communication skills and he appreciates that demonstrating his cognitive knowledge will help him in his future career.

"Authors inspire students. They help students enhance their writing skills as well as show them how to utilize their creative abilities to their advantage," Cindy said. "It is important to have authors speak to students so that students understand that hard work and dedication can lead them to obtaining their dreams."
