Jordan Guido, emergency management coordinator and public education specialist, spent the summer working on the program, which was inspired by similar initiatives at fire departments in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she used to work, and Illinois, where Fire Chief Ken Fustin is from.

Throughout the program, crews will follow the students from kindergarten to fifth grade with two structured presentations each year along with other drop-in visits to give students a close-up look at fire safety.

Cypress Creek Elementary School Counselor Rachel Jefferis organized the Adopt-a-Class program for the school's kindergarten classes this year.

"Our students especially loved that the firefighters came to have lunch with them a few weeks after their initial fire safety presentation," she said.
