Palm Coast's 11U all-star softball team scored eight runs in the fourth inning against Port St. Johns on Saturday, June 30, at the Indian Trails Sports Complex. In the middle of the sixth inning, Madison Swatkowski stole two bases on one play that gave Palm Coast a 10-run lead. By the end of the side, Palm Coast led 25-13.
Then came the rain and lightning.
The game was postponed briefly, but with the weather unrelenting, Port St. Johns' coach conceded the last outs in the final inning to give Palm Coast the victory.
"Our bats were alive," team manager Robbie Barrick said. "A lot of hits, a lot of good base running.”
Palm Coast, which was scheduled to play Yulee immediately after the game against Port St. Johns, was forced to wait until the morning of Sunday, July 1, to fight for their bid in the state tournament.
Yulee run-ruled Palm Coast 15-0 through three innings.
Palm Coast assistant coach Scott Weis, whose daughter Kayla Weis is the team's starting pitcher, said there were no tears among the team after the loss.
Added Barrick: “It was great for the girls. They had a good time out here. They spent a lot of time practicing getting this together. They did great. It’s just been a lot of fun. It’s all about the kids and getting them ready for the next level.”
Barrick said the team came together over the course of the season, becoming more than just teammates.
"They’ve all gotten to know each other and become friends," he said. "And it shows out there on the field.”
