Divers recovered the body of a missing Daytona Beach man in the river approximately 400 yards from where he was last seen around the boat dock at 5 Circle Oaks Trail.
Brent Levon Davis was pronounced dead at 1:52 p.m. on Monday, July 16, almost 36 hours after he went missing. Ormond Beach Police Department investigators, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and divers with the Volusia County Sheriff's
Office had been searching the river for the 31-year-old since 11:09 a.m. Sunday, police report. Divers initially found Davis' phone at the bottom of the river, directly in front of the dock.
The victim's ex-girlfriend told police Davis had been working on his vehicle outside the home she was house-sitting, and when he came inside and she asked him what he was up to, Davis said "Why does it matter?" He then grabbed the house key, locked the rear door and walked down to the docks around 2:15 a.m. She waited for him to come back for four hours before going outside with a flashlight to go look for him, telling police she was initially too scared to follow him out because it was dark.
She told police she didn't see or smell anything on Davis' person that would lead her to believe he was under the influence of drugs, though Davis' father later informed officers his son had an issue with marijuana and spice.
Though police reported no confirmed signs of foul play, they initially ruled his disappearance as suspicious.
